A tragic accident occurred at Gomoa Okyereko when a Youtong bus with registration number GT 5866-L collided head-on with a fuel tanker bearing registration number WR 2063-10, resulting in the loss of 16 lives.
In addition to the fatalities, 40 individuals sustained various injuries and were swiftly transported to the Trauma and Specialist Centre in Winneba for urgent medical attention.
DO2 Kwesi Hughes, the Municipal Fire Officer for Winneba, shared in an interview that it is suspected the driver of the Youtong bus may have been fatigued and fallen asleep, leading to this horrific accident.
The Ghana National Fire Service personnel worked diligently to rescue the trapped passengers from the Youtong bus. Unfortunately, the mate of the fuel tanker lost his life before the rescue team could extricate him.
According to DO2 Kwesi Hughes, the bus was en route from Abidjan to Buduburam, while the fuel tanker was carrying petrol and heading from Accra to Takoradi.
The Ghana Ambulance Service and the Police Service have also arrived at the scene, providing crucial support and assistance alongside the Ghana National Fire Service.
