Ghanaian artist Asenke, born Godfred Ekui, has explained why his latest track, “We Goofed,” featured renowned music producer Appietus and dancehall sensation Shatta Wale.

In an interview on Showbiz 360 with Giovanni Caleb, Asenke opened up about the deep inspiration behind the song, revealing a significant chapter in his life and his shared connection with Shatta Wale.

“It’s a true story about Shatta Wale and I. You’ll hear everything in the song. I schooled with Shatta Wale back in JHS. He left the school and attended Seven Great. Along the line, I realized he was very deep into music and so was I, but then, he left home just because of music,” he shared.

He further reminisced about the challenging period after Shatta Wale’s initial hit, ‘Moko Hoo,’ when it seemed like people had lost interest in his music. However, their persistence eventually paid off as they persevered, and their music took off to new heights.

According to him, “For me, it’s like a reunion on the song because it hasn’t been easy. After Shatta Wale came with his first hit song, ‘Moko Hoo’, after that era, it was like anything he came out with, nobody wanted to listen. We kept at it till the thing just exploded.”

When it comes to his music, Asenke explained that he doesn’t confine himself to a single genre as he prefers to blend different languages and let his musical inspiration guide him during the songwriting process, adding that he has returned to the music scene.

“I mix languages but I don’t categorize myself in one genre of music. I listen to what comes to me and I write my songs. I’m back full time to focus on my music,” he stated.

When asked to share the inspiration behind his stage name, Asenke noted that “ ‘Asenke’ means grace in Hebrew.”
