At least 97 people have died after a boat sank off the northern coast of Mozambique on Sunday.

Officials say the boat had been overloaded and wasn’t licensed to ferry people. Three more bodies were discovered on Monday according to Manuel Loforte of the country’s Maritime Institute.

Among the dead were children and almost 30 people are still reportedly missing.

About 11 people are currently receiving treatment. Local media reports say 130 people were aboard.

Most of the passengers were on their way to an event while others were reported to be fleeing from an alleged cholera outbreak in Lunga – a small town in the Nampula region.

The region’s secretary, Jamie Neto, said people had overacted to the outbreak and got on the boat which was designed as a fishing vessel.

Mozambique and a few neighbouring countries are currently tackling a cholera epidemic that broke out recently.
