Political Parties Petition Parliament Over Chief Justice’s Suspension

A coalition of political parties, spearheaded by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has formally petitioned Parliament, urging lawmakers to intervene in the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. The petition calls on Parliament to press President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider and revoke the decision.
Presenting the petition, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin accused President Mahama of undermining judicial independence through recent appointments, alleging these moves are designed to clear the path for a possible third term bid.
He further claimed the president intends to appoint a loyalist from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as chair of the Electoral Commission, warning that such actions threaten fair governance. Afenyo-Markin described the situation as a deliberate attempt to intimidate opponents and tilt the political playing field.
“This is a calculated assault on Ghana’s constitutional democracy. Today, we march not as members of political parties, but as patriots defending our nation. We stand against a regime that cloaks itself in democracy while acting with dictatorial intent,” he stated.
The Minority Leader appealed to Parliament to uphold judicial neutrality and safeguard constitutional principles.
Receiving the petition, the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, assured that the document would be forwarded to Speaker Alban Bagbin for further action, affirming Parliament’s commitment to ensuring justice prevails.
