Bawumia Confident NPP Will Return to Power in 2028

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, has expressed strong confidence that the party will return to government in the 2028 general elections.
Speaking to members of the NPP’s diaspora branch during a meeting in London, Dr. Bawumia pointed to Ghana’s political history, noting that opposition parties often have an edge following the tenure of a two-term president.
“Our political history suggests it is very difficult for a first-time presidential candidate to win an election in Ghana,” he said. “In 2028, the NDC is likely to field a first-time candidate. All things being equal, I believe that gives us an advantage.”
Dr. Bawumia also stated that the current administration, led by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), may struggle to deliver on the numerous promises it made during the 2024 campaign.
“In opposition, they made many promises and painted a very hopeful picture. But now that they are in power, we are seeing the opposite—cost of living is rising instead of decreasing, as they claimed it would,” he remarked.
Reflecting on the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections, Dr. Bawumia took a moment to apologise to party members and supporters for the outcome.
“The NPP worked hard—there’s no doubt—but we didn’t get everything right. On behalf of myself and the party, I sincerely apologise for the missteps, especially with the numbers,” he said.
Despite the party’s loss, Dr. Bawumia remains hopeful for the future.
“By the grace of God, if given another opportunity, we will get many things right. We’ve learned valuable lessons that will guide us moving forward,” he added.
In the aftermath of the 2024 elections, the NPP established a 12-member committee chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye, to investigate the causes of the defeat. The committee has submitted its findings to the party leadership, though the contents of the report have not been made public, with the party stating it is for internal use only.
The NPP suffered considerable setbacks in both the presidential and parliamentary races in 2024, prompting renewed efforts to rebuild and reposition the party ahead of the next electoral cycle.
