The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is pushing back strongly against what it sees as politically motivated intimidation following the arrest of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako — popularly known as Chairman Wontumi — by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, May 27.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye didn’t mince words. He described the arrest as alarming and unfair, warning that the party would not tolerate what it believes is targeted harassment of its members.

“We will resist any form of political harassment,” Boakye declared. “We are a law-abiding political party and have always shown our willingness to cooperate with investigative bodies. But this kind of treatment is unacceptable.”

Boakye also questioned the manner in which the arrest was carried out, comparing it to something out of an action movie, suggesting it was unnecessarily dramatic.

According to reports, Chairman Wontumi had earlier responded to an invitation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Tuesday morning. Shortly after that meeting, EOCO officials reportedly took him into custody to assist with ongoing investigations.

Though EOCO has not released an official statement about the case, sources indicate that Wontumi is being questioned over alleged involvement in illegal mining activities. He had reportedly been cautioned a day earlier — on Monday, May 26 — for offenses related to operating without a license, polluting water bodies, and entering a forest reserve without proper authorization.

The NPP has made it clear it views these actions as part of a larger pattern of intimidation and says it will stand firm in defense of its members.
