Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced his departure from a federal government role focused on reducing inefficiency. His exit follows criticism of a key budget bill supported by the Trump administration.

Musk served as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an agency created by President Donald Trump at the start of his second term through an executive order. DOGE’s mission is to streamline and downsize the federal government.

Reason for Departure

According to a White House official cited by Reuters, Musk’s departure was decided at the senior staff level. He did not have a direct conversation with President Trump prior to the announcement. His tenure as a special government employee was expected to conclude around May 30, marking 130 days in the role.

Reports from the Associated Press indicate that Musk’s decision to leave was driven by disagreements over provisions in Trump’s recent budget proposal.

Despite Musk’s exit, administration officials have confirmed that DOGE’s work to restructure and reduce the size of the federal government will continue.
